Some vehicles now come with cameras built in with their main objective to help you when you reverse with a built in reversing camera or to help your car keep within its lanes when driving on autopilot or lane assist. Some also allow you to potentially use the built in cameras to imitate the functions of a dashcam but most (if not all) fall short in comparison to dashcams such as Blackvue, Thinkware or Goluk.
We installed front and rear Goluk dashcam into this Tesla model X in Sheffield and the owner was very pleased that he was able to have the dashcams recording 24/7 and have a minimal impact to his main vehicle battery.
On Tesla vehicles, should you wish to enable the built in autopilot cameras as a dashcam, the consequences are that you may lose over 1 mile per hour of monitoring/recording. Not only that, the focal point and field of view of the built in cameras are focused to assist in its autopilot abilities and not that of a wide angle view dashcam. The result after a few days, your Tesla battery may be flat and with gaps and spaces between the vehicle cameras, you might actually miss an important incident.
Imagine leaving your Tesla at an airport for a week or so!
Should you disable your Teslacam? We would advise you definitely enable and use it whilst you are driving. Having an extra Dashcam discretely installed to compliment your existing Tesla cameras can be a very worthy investment, and you can have that investment transferred to you next vehicle.
With dashcams such as Blackvue, Thinkware or Goluk installed into a Tesla, you might not actually notice any battery degradation or mileage use at all. In fact some owners said at the very worst with the cameras being on 24/7, they use maybe 2 miles in around 4 weeks!
